Modern society is a sad state that produces many over-processed livers. When we overeat or eat processed or fried foods, and, anytime we are exposed to environmental pollutants or stress, the liver becomes overworked and overloaded. When the liver is taxed, it can’t process toxins and fat in an efficient way. There are many foods that can help cleanse the liver naturally by stimulating its natural ability to clean toxic waste from the body.
In the past, I have discussed my favorite cleansing foods. This list is a little more specific and focuses mainly on foods that can help cleanse your liver. In addition to taking a liver-cleansing supplement, and performing at least two liver and gallbladder cleanses per year, eating the following foods is the best way to keep your liver healthy and functioning the way you need it to. I would encourage you to incorporate these liver cleanse foods into your weekly diet.
Garlic – is a highly beneficial addition to any diet. It contains large amounts of selenium and allicin. These two compounds are very effective in activating liver enzymes.
Enjoy garlic in sauces, soups and in concoctions created in your juicer.
Grapefruit – contains high amounts of antioxidants and vitamin C. Additionally, drinking grapefruit juice is an excellent way to increase the amount of detoxification enzymes in the liver.
Grapefruit juice also flushes out toxins and carcinogens. Eating a grapefruit before a meal helps with digestion and takes the edge off your appetite for excellent weight loss benefits.
Carrots, beets and other vegetables that are high in beta-carotene and plant flavonoids stimulate the liver and improve its overall function. Orange and red veggies such as sweet potatoes and red cabbage also deliver these benefits.
Green tea is filled with catechins and plant antioxidants. Drinking a cup or two of green tea every day is a great way to boost overall liver function. If you do not like the taste of green tea on its own, you can include it along with orange pekoe tea when you make iced tea.
Juiced, raw or cooked green leafy vegetables are filled with plant chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs environmental toxins found throughout the body and specifically in the bloodstream. This action neutralizes and eliminates pesticides and chemicals in your system before they have a chance to reach the liver. This provides tremendous protection for your liver.
Avocados are remarkable super-food that boosts your liver’s ability to remove harmful toxins. They contain healthy oils that help absorb toxins and promote healthy hair and skin.
An apple a day really does keep the doctor away! Apples contain pectin in very high amounts. This substance supports your body in cleansing and releasing toxins found in the digestive tract. This action lightens your liver’s load in terms of cleansing your body of toxins.
Healthful oils such as coconut oil, flaxseed oil, extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) and hemp seed oil provide excellent liver support. Using the right amount of these healthful oils creates a lipid base that absorbs harmful toxins. This is another way of lightening the load for your liver!
Whole grains assist in metabolizing fat. Brown rice is an excellent example of a whole grain that boosts liver function, reduces congestion in the liver and provides a bounty of B vitamins. Add a teaspoon of turmeric and a tablespoon of coconut oil to your rice while cooking for even more liver supporting benefits.
Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables provide important enzymes and boost liver enzyme production. Abundant enzymes in the liver help remove toxins and carcinogens from your body.
Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges and so forth are all high in vitamin C. It is important to get an abundant amount of vitamin C every day to help your body synthesize toxic materials into substances that can be washed away with water. Drink freshly squeezed citrus juice every morning to stimulate your liver.
Walnuts are an abundant source of arginine, an amino acid that supports liver function by detoxifying ammonia and boosting the production of glutathione.
Turmeric is a tasty spice that is the main component of curry mixes. It is a popular spice in Indian foods, and it can easily be added to everyday foods ranging from smoothies to oatmeal to scrambled eggs and more. Turmeric provides tremendous liver support as well as a host of other health benefits. Turmeric helps detoxify the liver by boosting enzyme production and flushing out carcinogens.
Oddball veggies such as turnips, kale, asparagus and artichokes also provide superb liver support by helping flush out toxins. Generally speaking all fruits and vegetables are good for your liver!
